For Malaysian fans of “Toy Story” that have been looking forward to the release of “Lightyear” this 16 June, sorry folks, you are going to be disappointed.
Cinema Online has received a confirmation from the Malaysian office of The Walt Disney Company that the highly anticipated animated feature about the space man (voiced by Chris Evans) will not be playing in Malaysia.
However, no official statement has yet been released by the said company of the reasons why Malaysian fans will not get to watch the exploits of Buzz Lightyear, and his adventures and beyond.
The Film Censorship Board of Malaysia has yet to release a statement at the time of writing as well.
There has been speculations that a particular scene which features a kiss between a same-sex couple may be the reason why “Lightyear” is buzzing pass Malaysia.
It has been reported in international media that Egypt and UAE have banned the film with Kuwait expecting to follow suit – due to the film containing elements of gay characters and scenes.
Earlier in April, the Benedict Cumberbatch-starrer “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” was banned in Brunei, Saudi Arabia and Egypt for having debuted the character America Chavez – who has been portrayed as gay in the comics.
