Mattel has released its first ever hijab-wearing Barbie in honour of American fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad, an Olympic bronze medallist and the first American woman to wear the Islamic headscarf while competing at the Olympics.
The hijab-wearing doll is the latest addition to Mattel’s Sheroes collection, which honours female role-models and their amazing achievements.
“Thank you Mattel for announcing me as the newest member of the Barbie Shero family! The Barbie Shero Program recognizes women who break boundaries to inspire the next generation of girls and I am so excited to join this incredible group of women,” Ibtihaj shared on her social media.
“I’m proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab! This is a childhood dream come true!”
Some of the other Sheroes include Ashley Graham, Zendaya, Kristin Chenoweth, Gabby Douglas, Emmy Rossum, Trisha Yearwood, Misty Copeland and Ava DuVernay.
Ibtihaj unveiled her Barbie on Monday during Glamour’s Woman of the Year summit in New York. The doll will be available for purchase in 2018.
