The first season of MasterChef Asia has finally found its winner – Singaporean lawyer Woo Wai Leong has earned the coveted title of MasterChef Asia season 1!
Leong has beaten his competitor from Malaysia, Marcus Low by a mere three points in the grand finale last Thursday, 10 December 2015, with his dish “Chili Crab Pâte à Choux Gnocchi”, a fusion of Asian and Italian cooking styles to present a bold European twist to Singapore’s national dish, as well as his SG50-themed dessert, “Financier with Vermouth Cherries and Mascarpone Kaffir Lime Sorbet”.
The dessert resembled a junk boat featuring financiers, a type of sponge cake, and meringue shards as the sails of the boat; infusing flavours of the Singapore Sling.
“Ever since I was a teenager, I’ve felt a deep passion for the kitchen.” said Leong in a statement.
“This competition has been a real life changing experience and being Asia’s first MasterChef is definitely the proverbial icing on the cake. I am stoked about writing my first cookbook and you would definitely see unique food pairings and fusion of cuisines,” he added.
24-year-old Marcus Low also expressed his happiness of being able to be part of the competition and he has announced that he will be opening up his own eatery soon!
“Firstly it was a pleasure cooking for Masterchef Asia all the way to the final! It was the craziest thing I’ve done. Being on television is crazy!” said Low in a statement on his Facebook page.
“Thank you guys for all the support! Congrats to Leong he is the deserving winner! Guys the journey is not over! Next, to open up my own place!!”
