As reported on Mingpao News, the singer, who flew to Milan to accept the award, revealed that she was told to pick up the award backstage instead of appearing on stage like the other Western celebrities such as Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift, since “not all of the artistes from the other regions had come”.
Mainland singer Jane Zhang made headlines recently for refusing to participate and accept the MTV EMA’s award for Best Asian Act.
As a result, Jane decided not to accept the award, citing “feeling disrespected and discriminated against” as the reason.
In a statement issued later, the singer stated, “With the unfair and discriminatory treatment shown to us, we decided to formally withdraw from the MTV Europe Music Awards.”
This isn’t the first time a mainland artist has claimed to have suffered unequal treatment. Last year, Chopsticks Brothers, who won International Song award at the American Music Awards for their viral song, “Little Apple”, was given a commercial break slot to perform their song.
MTV China has expressed regret for what had happened at the Europe Music Awards, and said that they understand the reaction from Jane’s team.
