Malaysia’s Klang Valley is considered one of the region’s best cities to find great live music and it has some of the best live music acts especially at some local bars and pubs.
At some of these venues, night revellers can catch local as well as international music talents jamming and covering famous songs while relaxing in the cosy and laidback ambience.
Check out these nine bars in Klang Valley which have great live music from up and coming talented indie bands as well as established musicians that you should seriously check out if you’re a music lover.
1. Tom, Dick and Harry’s, Oasis Ara Damansara

With its warm and cosy ambience, the bar which won the Best Pub Grub in the Time Out KL Food Awards 2013 offers revellers regular live gigs from cover bands that enhance the atmosphere and moods of patrons with their wonderful rendition of popular songs. Apart from the great music, the bar sure didn’t win the award for nothing as it also offers great beer and food. Check out their specialty drinks Dick’s Margarita and Harry’s Fling while enjoying the live band performances. The place can get pretty packed on Fridays and Saturday’s especially if the local band, Hydra is performing, so get there early!
2. Ril’s, Bangsar

Ril’s bar is located upstairs of Ril’s restaurant, behind a velvet curtain. The bar gives off some 1920s kind of vibes with its low-lit lighting and jazzy mood. A perfect place to have a nice chat with friends while sipping the bar’s world class cocktails which are crafted with the utmost in care and attention to detail. During the week, the bar is just a normal haven but at the weekends, it becomes a popular venue with its live music and special musical guests. Don’t expect music that is too pop or loud here, as the place exudes class and it’s a place where blues and soul bands frequent to play.
3. Waikiki, Petaling Jaya

A Hawaiian-themed bar that started since mid-90s. With its straw-thatched roof, Tiki-style bar, rattan chairs and palm trees, the unique decoration of the bar will surely make patrons feel as if they have been transported all the way to Hawaii. Visitors can enjoy the live bands which will be on a rotating roster during the weekends while savouring the bar’s signature cocktail, Waikiki Breeze.
4. No Black Tie, Kuala Lumpur

Affectionately known, is KL’s Premier Jazz Club & Gastro-Bar, the bar features local and international acts with an eclectic choice of jazz, folk, rock and blues. The live performance in No Black Tie happens nightly, and its stage has featured Malaysia’s top singers and musicians as well as an impressive line-up of international acts too. Also, the place has a reputation of being the most sought after venue for up and coming as well as established musicians. Unlike some of the other bars, this venue is more like a music haunt than a bar, so expect to pay a cover charge ranging from rm30 – rm60 which may go to the performing musicians.
5. Merdekarya, Petaling Jaya

Merdekarya is a great place to chill with friends while gulping down some nice beers. Guests can have free open mic session from Tuesday to Friday, but would have to book a slot first. The carefree and comfy bar not only provides free good live music for free from Tuesday to Saturday, it also sells independent Malaysian books and music. Since the place is run by fellow Malaysian musician and novelist, Brian Gomez, guests are encouraged to tip the featured performers – as good manners.
6. The Bee, Publika

If you’re looking for a place to eat and enjoy good music, then The Bee at Publika is the place for you. The restaurant is known for its regular music events like Soundstruck, LIVE!, Lot 36, Feedback open mic nights, Tunes & Pints and acoustic showcases by rising performers and established musicians. It is a place for you to discover talented local acts and bands. Also, some international acts make the place as their tour stop in Malaysia. Free gigs will be on Friday and Saturdays and sometime, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
7. Backyard, Hartamas

A friendly neighbourhood pub where you can chill, play a game or two of pool and enjoy some of the best live musicians in town. Backyard has live music every night and the performance rang from local, regional and international acts. Not only that the music is great here but there is also a good selection of food. The place is also a great venue to catch up on some live sports. The bar takes up 3 shop lots, making it one of the biggest bars in Kuala Lumpur. Also, on weekends, it can get quite packed so head there early if you want to get a seat.
8. Laundry, The Curve

As a bar and lounge, Laundry is a great place to enjoy good tunes and booze. The bar was established since 2006 and even when there are plenty of new bars around, Laundry is still one of the city’s favourite go-to music venues. The place is famous for its eclectic list of local and international acts as well as its diverse offer of genres through its event series, including Laundry X An Honest Mistake Records, Urban Sunset as well as Laundry Unplugged. Free live music is available on every Wednesdays and Thursdays.
9. Alexis Bistro, Ampang

If you are a big fan of jazz music, then head over to Alexis Bistro in Ampang for some classy blues, soul, bossa nova, swings and classical music. Started since 2003, Alexis Bistro has successfully hosted a wide range of local, regional and international artistes. The high-class and stylish bistro offers free music performance on selected Fridays and Saturdays. Guests can also enjoy Alexis’ wood-fired pizza oven which is always in demand, and their weekend lunches are very popular with families.
