According to CRI News, the announcement was made by Wong Kar Wai during a Beijing press conference on 11 January, stating that he will only be producing the movie instead.
Though it was previously reported that Wong Kar Wai will be helming Zhang Jiajia’s “The Ferryman”, it was recently revealed that the author-scriptwriter will be directing the movie himself.
The story is part of Zhang’s collection, “I Belonged to You”, and will star Tony Leung in the lead role. The actor revealed that he will be brushing up his Mandarin skills as he will have a lot of dialogue this time around.
“The Ferryman” tells the story of an affair between a girl and a married painter in Changchun, whose wife cheated on him.
The movie will also be Alibaba Pictures’ first movie project since its establishment last year, and is expected to be released by the end of this year.
Zhang Jiajia is not the first Chinese author to have made the leap from writing to directing. Others include Guo Jingming (“Tiny Times”) and Han Han (“The Continent”).
