The man behind Singapore’s funniest and longest running sitcom, “Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd” might hang his iconic yellow wellington boots for good.
This morning, Today Online has reported that “Phua Chu Kang” actor, Gurmit Singh will not be renewing his contract with MediaCorp, the Singaporean media company that brought us the well-known sitcom, “Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd”, which Gurmit had worked for 20 years.
Gurmit revealed that the reason behind his decision is due to wanting to spend less time in the entertainment industry and more quality time with his family.
“I need to pay them back. If I don’t, I’ll be a horrible father and husband,” said Gurmit to Today Online.
Though he is ending his full-time contract with the company, Gurmit will not really disappear from showbiz for good.
A statement from the star’s management said that he will still be participating on “a more selective basis, with MediaCorp’s Artiste Management unit serving as his exclusive agent for commercial engagements”.
The 49-year-old actor also voiced out that he would like to be involved in more stage performances and movies.
So, what’s going to happen to “Phua Chu Kang Sdn Bhd”? The ongoing Malaysian spin-off series from the original “Phua Chu Kang Pte Ltd” might end with its second season since the actor himself have decided to participate less in the entertainment industry.
Gurmit Singh is a highly sought after host, comedian and actor who often participates in various events and also cameos in numerous series and shows, mostly as his iconic character, Phua Chu Kang who has a popular following in Singapore and Malaysia.
Now, Gurmit can finally concentrate more on his family; his wife, his 17-year-old daughter, 13-year-old son and 20-month-old baby girl.
“Finally, after 20 years, I’ll have the first New Year’s Eve with my family,” said Gurmit.
