Pakistani actress, model and host, Veena Malik has been sentenced to a 26 years prison for a ‘blasphemous’ mock wedding scene!
After taking part in a mock wedding scene broadcast by Geo TV that is loosely based on the marriage of the Prophet Mohamed’s daughter, the actress was sentenced to a 26 year jail term by a Pakistani court for an apparent religious offence.
The sentence was also extended to Malik’s husband, Asad Bashir Khan, Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, owner of the Jang-Geo media group and the host of the show, Shaista Wahidi.
“26 years! Come on. 26 years is a lifetime… But I have faith in the higher courts in Pakistan,” Malik said in a recent interview according to The Independent. “When the final verdict comes, it will do justice to me. Nothing bad is going to happen.”
The programme had sparked outrage among the Muslims, “The malicious acts of the proclaimed offenders ignited the sentiments of all the Muslims of the country and hurt the feelings, which cannot be taken lightly and there is need to strictly curb such tendency,” the court ordered.
The court also fined the convicted parties USD13,000 (RM43,962.75) and ordered them to sell off their properties as well as surrender their passports.
Malik was not present during the trial but she claimed that she would return to Pakistan in December to fight the sentence.
