Malaysian pride and joy, Datuk Lee Chong Wei, one of the best badminton players in the world has been implicated as one of the top athletes who failed a recent drug test, The Star Online reported.

The test happened at August’s World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark when Lee was randomly called out to do the test in which he was surprised by the result.

He then requested for a second test to be carried out for the ‘B’ sample sixteen days later, but the result of the test was not yet known.

According to Berita Harian, Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar said, “A statement regarding this matter has already been issued, for now, we are still waiting for the test result of ‘B’ sample.”

The Youth and Sports Minister also said that he would not tolerate athletes who tested positive for drugs, he said that the athletes should make sure that the food, supplementary, or medication are free of banned substance.

However, former Malaysian badminton player and Lee’s acquaintance, Muhd Hafiz Hashim believes that it was a misunderstanding, he believes that Lee would not have taken or eaten any banned substance.

“I cannot believe this, but if there is someone who wanted to bring him (Lee) down, he better properly explains this,” said Hafiz Hashim.

He also further added, “Maybe he did not realise when he took supplementary, he might have accidently taken it. But no matter what, taking drugs is inappropriate.”
