We previously reported that Perodua was going to debut a new car in its lineup and it was rumoured to be called “Perodua Axia”.

Looks like it’s a rumour no more – Perodua Axia is indeed real and the booking for it will start this coming Friday!

Anyone who wishes to own this sweet ride may visit any Perodua sales showroom, there are 180 of them nationwide. The booking fee will be between RM250 to RM300.

Confused how to pronounce the name? Perodua says it is pronounced as “a-zee-a”. Yes, it’s a play on the word Asia. Perodua president and CEO Datuk Aminar Rashid said it is because they “believe that the Perodua Axia is competitive in the region, which is why the word ‘Asia’ was incorporated into the name.”

Also, the letter X is not just there to fancify the name, it holds a special meaning as it represents the number ten. For those who are unaware, Axia is Perodua’s tenth car.

According to the local automotive site PaulTan.Org, buyers may choose which Perodua they wish to buy out of the four variant guises which are Standard E, Standard G, Special Edition and Advance.

Standard E is the base model with a price tag starting from RM24,900 for Peninsular Malaysia. A new warranty will debut along with the car – Perodua is now offering a five-year-warranty. That’s a first from Perodua.

Here are the known specifications of the car so far:

260 litres of boot space, shaped to be able to fit four travel bags.

Seats five. There was already a preview of the interior (dashboard included) provided by the Perodua Global Model A (GMA) Segment Space concept at last year’s KLIMS13 show

1KR three-cylinder engine. The1.0 litre all-aluminium 12-valve DOHC engine is based on Daihatsu’s 1KR-DE which is used in Indonesia’s Ayla. Weighing just 69kg, 10kg lighter than Viva’s cast iron engine, it is able to produce 65 PS at 5,000 rpm and 87 Nm of torque at 3,600 rpm.
