Say hello to Joyce Chu, YouTube’s latest singing sensation. The sweet looking 17-year-old girl from Johor Baru is making waves on the Internet with her catchy Malaysia Chabor (Malaysian girl) song. In just over a week, the song has garnered 2.3 million views on YouTube.
Written and composed by rapper-songwriter Namewee, the song is a mish-mash of English, Chinese, Korean and Hokkien. The song is also Joyce’s adorable way of telling her fans that she is simply proud to Malaysian. “I’m from JB, a place near Singapore. I’m a true Malaysian girl. I know kimchi tastes delicious, but my favourite is chendol (Asian dessert) and keropok (Asian snack).” she sings.
Frequently mistaken as a Korean because of her looks, she takes a pun on those who accuse her of going under the knife, an obsession in South Korea, “About my face, nose, chin and eyes and dimples, everything is fake including my ears”.
