“Inspired by the immense beauty of the Borneo rainforest, this costume conveys a powerful message to the universe on love, the pursuit of justice against the extinction of the orangutan due to the destruction of their lush rainforest habitat, the Dayak heritage, and the celebration of the inner strength and beauty of women,” read a statement by Miss Universe Indonesia.

Since orang-utan is native to both Indonesia and Malaysia, some Malaysian netizens pointed out that the costume bears similarity to the Iban tribe’s warrior costume from Sarawak.
