“Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen” and other viral videos out there

By now, surely you have already heard the infectiously addictive song, “PPAP”, short for “Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen” that has been trending all over social media.

It is not known why this one-minute long video which makes absolutely no sense is rapidly going viral, but it sure has all the typical formula of a viral video, such as an addictive beat, simple and silly lyrics, and a funny yet easy-to-learn dance moves.

Performed by Piko-Taro, a fictional character played by Japanese actor and songwriter Kazuhiko Kosaka, the original “PPAP” video has already gained more than 6.5 million views on YouTube, but on 9Gag’s Facebook, it had received over 54 million views.

After the video became an instant hit, various hilarious versions and parodies of the song began to surface.
