Remembering MH370: Conspiracy theories

The anniversary of the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 comes this 8 March 2014 with a heavy heart.

Although the Malaysian Prime Minister has declared the plane an accident with no survivors, the incident is still under thorough investigation.

For now, it has been concluded that the plane had ended up somewhere in the Indian Ocean.

However this statement has been criticised by many experts claiming that the evidence is inconclusive.

Nevertheless, investigations in the Indian Ocean are still going on and the underwater search has so far covered over 24,000 square kilometres of the seafloor.

However with the ongoing effort, there are still many rumours and conspiracy theories that have surfaced and circulated all over the net, proposing and explaining how the plane had vanished, making them all an interesting read and with some even keeping the hope of a positive outcome alive.

We take a look at some of the more popular theories that have come forth thus far:

Nigel Cawthorne claimed in his book “Flight MH370: The Mystery” that the plane was accidentally shot down during a US-Thai Joint Strike Fighter jet training exercise which went horribly wrong, and the search for survivors is just a cover-up.

Another shoot down theory claimed that the plane may have been gunned down by U.S. military personnel who feared that the plane had been hijacked and an attack similar to the September 11 incident on their Navy Base in Diego Garcia will happened.

Many parties have been accused of hijacking the plane. A Russian newspaper speculated that the plane has been hijacked by terrorist and flown to a small village in Afghanistan and the passengers were believed to be held hostage.

It was also believed that the plane may have been hijacked by the crew members on the plane, and the prime suspects are captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah and co-pilot Fariq Abdul Hamid. The Daily Mirror claimed that the captain had trained for landing and had landed on Indian Ocean Island with a short runway, using a flight simulator at his home computer.

Another theory claimed that the plane was hijacked by the Israeli to re-enact the September 11 incident and then to blame it on the Iranians.

The latest hijack theory which recently surfaced suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin is behind the disappearance of the plane. This theory is proposed by American author Jeff Wise.

MH370 and MH17 was actually the same plane

Some believe that the Malaysian flight MH17 which crashed down in Ukraine was actually the missing plane MH370, because like MH370, MH17 is also a Boeing 777 plane.

Furthermore, to support this theory, several news sites such as Opob News suggested that the plane wreckage found in Ukraine seems to have a different configuration of windows to the actual MH17.

404 Error: Plane not found

A Reddit user has apparently noted something unusual about MH370. The plane was the 404th Boeing 777 produced, thus linking it to the error message “404 Not Found” which commonly occurrs when a webpage is unavailable.

Coincidentally on January, a hacker group called the Lizard Squad which calls themselves as the "cyber caliphate" hacked the Malaysia Airlines official website and replaced its content with a message reading “404 – plane not found”.

It has been proposed that a second Bermuda Triangle called the Asian Bermuda Triangle, might have existed and that the plane has been consumed by it.

According to UK Mirror, some theorists believed that the plane may have entered another Devil's Triangle into another dimension.

The plane was abducted by Aliens

A number of social media users have concluded that extraterrestrial being may have something to do with the missing plane. Some bloggers even pointed out the number of recent UFO sightings in Malaysia as evidence for extraterrestrial intervention.

A CNN's poll reported that 9% of its respondents believed it was very or somewhat likely that the plane was abducted by aliens, "time travelers or beings from another dimension".
