For those who may not know, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is an activity to dare a participant to take a bucket of ice-cold water and dump it on your head.

Apparently, there is a point to this, if the participant has failed to take up the challenge within 24-hours from the time they’ve been challenged, they will have to donate money to charity.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is actually a fundraising campaign supported by the ALS Association who promotes awareness about issues related to ALS disease.

ALS which stands for Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis an also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, a condition which causes paralysis, difficulty in speaking, swallowing and breathing.

The disease became well known when American baseball player, Lou Gehrig suffered from this disease at age 36 and died two years later.

The challenge was first started by a golfer named Chris Kennedy who was dared by his friend to take up the ice bucket challenge.

At that time, the challenge was not tied to any specific charity organization or ALS. But, Kennedy’s friend had selected a charity that benefits a young child with cancer.

The game was then passed on, Kennedy then nominated his wife’s cousin Jeanette Senerchia, whose husband Anthony has suffered from ALS for 11 years. From that point on, the Ice Bucket Challenge and ALS were linked.

The challenge has now gone viral in social media as more and more people were nominated to take up the challenge and many videos were posted on Facebook and other social media sites which ended up gaining attention from all over the world.
