Comic book icon, Archie is being killed off

CNN has officially reported that comic icon Archie Andrews from the long-running Archie comic series will die from protecting his gay friend, Kevin Keller from an assassin’s bullet in the comic book issue “Life With Archie #36”.

“Life with Archie” is a comic series published by Archie comics where in a separate comic universe, Archie is an adult married to either Betty Cooper or Veronica Lodge in two distinct timelines.

Archie's love interests, Betty Cooper (Left) and Veronica Lodge (Right).

These two timelines later converge in “Life With Archie #36” where he is killed off from an assassination attempt from a stalker's bullet directed towards his gay friend, Kevin Keller who is a newly-elected United States Senator and a campaigner for gay rights and gun control.

Kevin Keller, the first openly gay character in Archie Comics history.

Jon Goldwater, CEO of Archie Comics verifies that in both parallel futures of his marriage life with either Veronica or Betty covered by the “Life With Archie” series, Archie's final fate is the same.

In a press release, Goldwater explained the reason he killed off Archie’s character, “I think it's the natural conclusion to the "Life With Archie" series. Archie dies as he lived: heroically. He dies saving the life of a friend and does it in his usual selfless way. Archie has always been a representation of us -- the best of us. Our strengths and our faults.”

Although Archie will be dead in the “Life With Archie” series, Goldwater said that he will live on forever as a teenager in the other Archie comic universe such as “Classic Archie” and “Afterlife With Archie” series.

“Afterlife with Archie”, a spinoff horror series in which Archie and his high school friends fight zombies.

“Well, this is the end. This is how Archie dies in the pages of "Life With Archie." We will not be retconning, reversing or backtracking on this story in terms of "Life With Archie," said Goldwater.

According to IGN, the series will conclude with next week's issue “Life With Archie #37”, which serves as an epilogue as Archie's friends and family reflect on the life of Riverdale's favourite son.
